The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking individuals for participation in the Public Health Apprentice Program (PHAP), a three-year program providing frontline work experience and training in public health. Apprentices are involved in a wide variety of public health activities relating to disease control and prevention and health promotion. Apprenticeships involve a series of progressive assignments in local health departments beginning on or about July 20, 2009. Successful completion of the program will prepare Apprentices for future career opportunities in public health at national, state and local levels. McKing Consulting Corporation has been contracted by CDC to coordinate PHAP recruitment activities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Qualifications: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Applicants must have a Bachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited four year institution prior to July 1, 2009. Individuals with an academic emphasis in the physical and social sciences as well as the humanities are encouraged to apply. <\/span><\/p>\n

Locations: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2009, Apprenticeships will be established in partnership with public health agencies in the following states: Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Texas. Specific assignment locations within these states have not yet been determined. <\/span><\/p>\n

Job Functions: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Apprentices will perform some or all of the following job functions: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Interaction with public health clients (e.g., interviewing, counseling, and education) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Investigation of public health problems and issues (e.g., assisting in disease outbreak investigations and assisting in implementing actions) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Data collection, analysis and reporting (e.g., as relates to case reports and field investigations) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Surveillance activities (e.g., recording and processing case reports from health care providers, labs, hospitals; analyzing information for trends) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Public health education (e.g., developing public health education information for individuals or communities; helping to plan and deliver presentations and publicity campaigns) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Provision of public health services (e.g., facilitating clinical services, making home visits) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Community involvement and partnership (e.g., working with community agencies to design and conduct programs; participating in community health assessments) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Liaison with other entities in the public health system (e.g., working with private health care providers, hospitals, laboratories, medical staff, and community-based organizations) <\/span><\/p>\n

Salary and Benefits: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The starting salary range is approximately $30,000 – $45,000, and will vary based on location. Apprentices will also be eligible for a full range of benefits. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span>A cover letter or email that includes reference to the State (e.g., Georgia, Florida, etc) where you are applying for an Apprenticeship. A separate application must be submitted for each State in which you want to be considered for an Apprenticeship<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span>2 letters of reference from someone who knows you professionally (e.g., a work supervisor or college professor) <\/span><\/p>\n
