The Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics <\/span><\/strong>is looking for MPH students interested in a new practicum opportunity in community-based safety net clinics in the New Orleans metropolitan area. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Project: <\/span><\/strong>Using effective provider-patient communication to improve cancer screening in low health literacy patients<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Study Objectives: <\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(1)<\/span> <\/span>To teach primary care physicians how to recognize low health literacy patients and effectively counsel them on cancer screening using risk communication and shared decision making <\/span><\/p>\n

(2)<\/span> <\/span>To assess the impact of training on changes in physician communication behavior and changes in low health literacy patients\u2019 cancer screening behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Student Learning Objectives: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(1)<\/span> <\/span>To learn about cancer risk communication and health literacy<\/span><\/p>\n

(2)<\/span> <\/span>To learn strategies for recruiting patients to research studies<\/span><\/p>\n

(3)<\/span> <\/span>To learn about survey development, implementation, and\/or data analysis<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Minimum Requirement<\/span><\/strong>: Students must have their own transportation to visit community clinics<\/span><\/p>\n
