Go to www.usphs.gov\/student for more information.\" hspace=\"12\" width=\"214\" height=\"171\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">WHO, WHAT:<\/span><\/strong> The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) offers internships through the JRCOSTEP.\u00a0 These training positions are available to students who have completed <strong>at least 2 years<\/strong> of study in a professionally accredited baccalaureate program in specific health disciplines that meet EHO requirements; or students who are enrolled in a masters level program that meets EHO requirements (for EHO requirements and qualifying degree information, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/usphs.gov\/profession\/environmental\/requirements.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/usphs.gov\/profession\/environmental\/requirements.aspx<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 JRCOSTEP participants work in the same exciting Federal agencies and programs as full Commissioned Corps officers and earn approximately $3,000\/month as an Ensign in the PHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">WHEN:<\/span><\/strong> Typical assignments in locations throughout the country vary from <strong>31 to 120 days<\/strong> during official school breaks.\u00a0 Most JRCOSTEP participants are hired for the summer months (i.e., June &#8211; August).\u00a0 Detailed information on the JRCOSTEP program is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usphs.gov\/student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.usphs.gov\/student<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">WHERE:<\/span><\/strong> As a JRCOSTEP, a student is assigned a preceptor at a field location who will assign work\/projects related to the field of environmental health.\u00a0 Agencies most likely to hire an EHO JRCOSTEP are Indian Health Service (IHS), Bureau of Prisons (BOP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA).\u00a0 Some duty stations can be rural and isolated.\u00a0 Students can learn more about IHS JRCOSTEP experiences by visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dehs.ihs.gov\/costep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.dehs.ihs.gov\/costep<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">HOW:<\/span><\/strong> The JRCOSTEP application and placement process is likely more involved than the typical environmental health internship.\u00a0 Here are some tips for interested students:<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;\"><span style=\"font-family:Symbol;\"><span>\u00b7<span style=\"font-family:&quot;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:7pt;line-height:normal;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Review application information carefully!<\/span><\/strong> All of the necessary application information and forms are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usphs.gov\/student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.usphs.gov\/student<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;\"><span style=\"font-family:Symbol;\"><span>\u00b7<span style=\"font-family:&quot;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:7pt;line-height:normal;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Submit your application early!<\/span><\/strong> There is no official application deadline for JRCOSTEP positions; however, we strongly recommend that students seeking summer internships begin their application (submit form PHS-50) by <strong>December 31 <\/strong>to get your name in the database.\u00a0 This is because agencies start looking for JRCOSTEP students in January and February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;\"><span style=\"font-family:Symbol;\"><span>\u00b7<span style=\"font-family:&quot;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:7pt;line-height:normal;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Make sure you complete ALL the required components!<\/span><\/strong> An application is not complete until all 4 parts are received by PHS.\u00a0 The 4 parts are: the PHS Application (PHS-50), 3 letters of reference, current college transcripts, and medical form.\u00a0 Print forms at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usphs.gov\/student\/jrcostep.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.usphs.gov\/student\/jrcostep.aspx<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;\"><span style=\"font-family:Symbol;\"><span>\u00b7<span style=\"font-family:&quot;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:7pt;line-height:normal;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Keep copies of your application! <\/span><\/strong>PHS plans to offer a way to apply on-line in the future, but for now they are still using a paper system. Things can and do get lost, so please keep a copy of everything you submit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;\"><span style=\"font-family:Symbol;\"><span>\u00b7<span style=\"font-family:&quot;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:7pt;line-height:normal;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Follow-up!<\/span><\/strong> Students sometimes experience lost forms and slow notifications from PHS.\u00a0 Students should call PHS to make sure their application is complete.\u00a0 Not receiving reference letters and transcripts are the most common reasons for holding up applications. You can call PHS headquarters at 1-800\u2013279\u20131605, or you can check the status of your application online at: <a href=\"https:\/\/dcpweb.psc.gov\/rab\/scripts\/app_main_menu.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/dcpweb.psc.gov\/rab\/scripts\/app_main_menu.htm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;text-indent:-.25in;\"><span style=\"font-family:Symbol;\"><span>\u00b7<span style=\"font-family:&quot;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:7pt;line-height:normal;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Use Agency Contacts!<\/span><\/strong> The JRCOSTEP application is processed by PHS but JRCOSTEP participants are selected and placed in assignments by Agency contacts.\u00a0 Advisors and students that make contact with Agencies and PHS Environmental Health Officer Associate Recruiters increase their chance of selection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"z-index:251658240;left:-3px;top:2px;width:642px;height:9px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/co109w.col109.mail.live.com\/mail\/SafeRedirect.aspx?hm__tg=http:\/\/65.55.40.55\/att\/GetAttachment.aspx&amp;hm__qs=file%3d4cf6256e-18a2-4ad4-b1af-6c9ad1f2660f.png%26ct%3daW1hZ2UvcG5n%26name%3daW1hZ2UwMDIucG5n%26inline%3d1%26rfc%3d0%26empty%3dFalse%26imgsrc%3dcid%253aimage002.png%254001C94EED.88011DC0&amp;oneredir=1&amp;ip=10.12.144.8&amp;d=d1803&amp;mf=2&amp;a=01_4d16b02f4e30fc7ed6f85cd661ce6df3fe7854273fc54ded185b4446cd0db73a\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"7\" \/><\/span><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Student Selection Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">The following are some common reasons for selecting and not selecting students for JRCOSTEP assignments.\u00a0 This is provided to help understand the process, not as definitive rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Student Selection and Notification<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;\">Formal selection and notification of students typically takes place around March for that summer\u2019s JRCOSTEP assignments.\u00a0 Students that do not hear from PHS by April have a low probability of being selected, but it is possible if other students turn down their opportunity or an agency is late to begin the selection process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration:none;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Common factors that contribute to selection<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Direct Recruitment: <\/strong>a      preceptor contacts the school or student and lines up an assignment.<\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Good References<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Good Grades<\/strong>: 3.5 or      greater GPA<\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Good \u201cFit\u201d: <\/strong>The PHS      is not for everyone &#8211; we are looking for individuals with career      potential, a willingness to accept any assignment, diverse work      experience, and demonstrated leadership experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.25in;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Common factors that contribute to non-selection<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Poor GPA, Weak      References<\/strong>.\u00a0 GPA less than 2.5, very few environmental health courses,      very selective on assignment location, little leadership experience.<\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>No Career Potential<\/strong>.\u00a0      No plans of leaving home; no match of student interests and PHS needs.<\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Close to Graduation. <\/strong>JRCOSTEP      participants must be in school to be eligible.<\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>No Car.<\/strong> Many duty      locations are remote and rural with housing offsite.\u00a0 An assignment is      difficult without a car for off duty transportation.<\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Arrest Record<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong>Fail Medical      Clearance. <\/strong>PHS is a uniform service with physical fitness      requirements.\u00a0 Students have been turned down for chronic health      conditions and exceeding height\/weight standards.
