DSTD accomplishes this mission through the provision of technical and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">financial support to 65 STD prevention programs nationwide; including the 50 states, 7 large cities,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">and 8 territories. STD prevention activities supported include disease surveillance, disease<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">intervention (counseling and partner notification services), school and community based educations<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">programs, and program relevant behavioral, epidemiologic, clinical, health services, and evaluation<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">research. At the national level, DSTD supports technical assistance, laboratory, clinical, and program<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">training, operational programs, policy coordination, guidelines development and prevention research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Fellowship Assignment Description:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Several infectious disease and other sub-specialty postdoctoral fellowship programs in the United<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">States emphasize sexually transmitted diseases in trainees\u2019 research experience and career<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">development. However, the majority of these fellowships have emphasized microbiology,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">immunopathology, diagnosis and clinical management more than epidemiology, prevention, and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">service delivery. While the existing training programs have been successful in creating a national<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">pool of superior academic investigators, with a few notable exceptions, trainees have either remained<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">in an STD research setting or have moved out of the field altogether and have not assumed positions<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">of leadership and responsibility in the field of STD services in state or local health departments. This<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">STD prevention fellowship will emphasize epidemiology, behavioral science, health services research,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">and prevention of STDs. Under supervision and mentorship, fellows will pursue one or more research<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">projects directly relevant to careers in public health, STD epidemiology, and prevention. Examples<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">include research in provision of STD prevention services, research in STD\/HIV interaction, analysis of<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">traditional or innovative approaches to STD prevention and control such as partner notification or peer<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">counseling; and behavioral intervention research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">The proposed fellowship\u2019s major component consists of research training that emphasizes STD<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">epidemiology, behavioral sciences, prevention and\/or service delivery at the Division of STD<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Prevention (DSTD), National Centers for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHSTP), Centers for<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:white;\">ease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:white;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Required and\/or Desired Skills and Knowledge:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">This fellowship is a post-doctoral level experience. Applicants must have earned an MD, DO, PhD,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">DrPH, or equivalent degree. Preferred medical specialties include infectious diseases, OB\/GYN,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">family medicine, adolescent medicine, preventive medicine or internal medicine. While the fellowship<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">is primarily designed for individuals with medical training, non-medical post-doctoral candidates,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">including individuals trained in public health, epidemiology, or one of the behavioral sciences, health<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">services research or nursing, are also eligible and may be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Strong preference will be shown to applicants currently involved with a university-affiliated research<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">component with an emphasis in one or more of the following as related to STD: epidemiology,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">behavioral science, prevention, and science delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">NOTE SPECIAL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Applicant must provide three letters of recommendation. The personal essay should be one page,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">and outline career goals with particular emphasis on future involvement in STD prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Expected Benefits:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">The primary goal of this fellowship is to provide a training experience for individuals who, upon<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">completion, can be appointed to universities, or state or local health department STD prevention<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">programs. This is critical to developing\/ reshaping a balanced STD prevention focus into the next<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">century. The individual fellow will be assigned specific program-relevant research during the<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">fellowship. This unique experience will help to develop a cadre of experts in STD prevention with an<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">understanding of the public health system in this nation, and who will be able to address STD<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">prevention needs across public and private sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">Period of Assignment:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">The term of each Fellowship is one year, with the possibility of a one year renewal, for a total of two<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">years maximum, and is anticipated to be completed entirely at the Centers for Disease Control\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, Division of STD Prevention (DSTD) in Atlanta, GA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">DSTD maintains projects in other geographic locations in the continental US and, upon identification<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">and availability of a suitable project, may instead choose to sponsor one or more of the fellowships at<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"EC_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black;\">an alternate geographic site(s), to be determined at the discretion of the DSTD.
