Media Advocates for Prevention Program Assistant<\/p>\n
Organizational Background:
\nIncorporated in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is
\na not-for-profit 501[c] (3) organization based in New Orleans,
\nLouisiana. IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and
\nspiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their
\nfamilies. IWES is a social change organization that strives to improve
\nthe lives of women, youth, and communities of color through sexual
\nhealth education, training, and advocacy.<\/p>\n
Program Description- Media Advocates for Prevention:
\nThe Media Advocates for Prevention (MAP) Project is an adaptation of the
\nCommunity PROMISE intervention, a science-based, CDC-approved curriculum
\nfor HIV prevention that has been proven effective for youth at high
\nrisk. MAP integrates media advocacy and development to create
\nyouth-appropriate media pieces that promote HIV risk reduction and
\ntesting among African-American and Latino youth. We utilize a youth
\ndevelopment framework with our core group of youth peer advocates, who
\nthen impact their community through a peer-outreach model.<\/p>\n
Position Description:
\nThe Media Advocates for Prevention Assistant is responsible for working
\nwith program staff to ensure youth participation and representation in
\nthe youth-directed initiatives of IWES. Initial responsibilities
\ninclude assisting with the administration of the IWES adolescent health
\nsurvey, including: data collection, data management, analysis, and
\nreport writing. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the MAP
\nmyspace page, assisting with Monitoring and evaluation, curriculum
\ndevelopment, etc. S\/he is responsible for assisting program staff with
\nplanning, promotion, and implementation of public health activities for
\nyouth. This is a part-time position (approximately 10-12 hours per
\nweek) under the supervision of the Program Director for HIV Prevention
\nand can be adapted to fit the needs of a Capstone or internship.<\/p>\n
Qualifications:
\n* Bachelor’s degree with training and experience in public health.
\n* Experience with survey administration, data collection, and
\nanalysis- a plus.
\n* Experience with youth-directed programming and training
\ninitiatives.
\n* Knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to HIV risk reduction
\ninterventions, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent health, and
\nminority health.
\n* Experience in media development – a plus.
\n* Knowledge of MYSPACE- a plus.
\n* Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills,
\nincluding
\nexperience in cross-cultural exchanges.
\n* Highly organized and task-oriented. Good time management
\nskills.
\n* Proficient in current versions of Windows, Microsoft Office,
\nEmail,
\nand Internet.
\n* Spanish language skills – a plus.
\n* Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a
\nteam.
\n* Willingness to work night and weekend hours as requested.<\/p>\n
Desired starting date is September 2008. Compensation is dependent on
\neducation and experience.<\/p>\n
