Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives is seeking applicants for the Jones Scholars Internship Program for the Spring 2009 semester. Through this innovative paid internship program, Tulane students will have an opportunity to support the transformation of public education taking place in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>The Jones Scholars Program was created to provide valuable intellectual and human capital to the work of the K-12 public education community in New Orleans, building their capacity and expertise.\u00a0 With dedicated support from Tulane&#8217;s brightest students, schools and education nonprofits will have the chance to make even greater strides toward improving the educational achievement for the students in our city&#8217;s public schools.\u00a0 Jones Scholars spend a semester working directly for a charter or traditional public school in Orleans Parish, or with one of the high-impact nonprofit organizations that support them, on a project determined by the host site.\u00a0 The Cowen Institute provides stipends of $6,000 for the semester of work performed on assigned projects (20 hours per week is expected).\u00a0 For Fall 2008, five Jones Scholars have been selected to be placed in local schools and nonprofits with assignments that include preparing business plans and financial analyses, implementing tutoring and literacy programs, researching best practices and program efficacy, and conducting an evaluation of post-traumatic stress among school-age children.\u00a0 They represent academic disciplines in law, public health, and business. Previous internship participants have indicated that this internship experience has been a life-changing one for them.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re currently seeking Tulane students who want to leave their mark, serve in the educational system in the future, or simply become informed civic leaders for this highly competitive and selective internship experience.
