Incorporated in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is a not-for-profit 501[c](3) organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana. IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their families. IWES is a social change organization that strives to improve the lives of women, youth, and communities of color through sexual health education, training, and advocacy.<\/p>\n
The Communications Consultant is responsible for the management and coordination of media literacy, advocacy, and development activities for the outreach and educational initiatives of the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES). This position will promote the mission of IWES by working closely with other staff to support educational, training, and organizing activities. <\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n Duties and Responsibilities:<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n \u00a7 Develop and implement curriculum to train youth participants in interviewing skills, media literacy, media advocacy, media development, and social marketing.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Facilitate development of HIV prevention media messages.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Develop and implement media skills training (print, radio, video, TV, internet) with youth participants.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Ensure communications and messages are reaching the intended target audiences.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Coordinate activities with youth participants, school and community partners, and staff to develop strategies for media message dissemination.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Support communication and media channels and networks within the school and community.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Maintain media equipment.<\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n Knowledge and Skills Required:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a7 Bachelors degree in communications or related field.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Experience in health communications, media literacy, and social marketing.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Experience with community organizing, coalition building, and program implementation.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Experience with print, radio, video, TV media development and production, including Apple application (iMovie),<\/p>\n \u00a7 Knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to HIV prevention preferred.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Experience facilitating large group discussions, training, and workshops.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Excellent organizational and time management skills.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Proficiency in current versions of Windows, word processing software, email programs, and Internet.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including experience in cross-cultural exchanges.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Sensitivity to cultural, racial, and sexual diversity.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Ability to work independently and as a team member.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.<\/p>\n \u00a7 Commitment to organizational mission is essential. Willingness to work occasional night and weekend hours. Limited travel may be necessary.<\/p>\n Desired starting date is July\/August 2008. Compensation is dependent on education and experience.
