According to the CDC,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/sexualbehaviors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 10 percent of sexually experienced high school students have been tested for HIV<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a failure of the system for youth,\u201d said Adam Leonard, a nurse practitioner with the San Francisco Department of Public Health who provides PrEP and HIV care to youth and works as<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>an assistant clinical professor of nursing at the University of California at San Francisco. \u201cIt means we\u2019re not having conversations with youth in the first place. We\u2019re making assumptions about youth who are and are not \u2018at risk\u2019 for HIV or youth aren\u2019t willing to disclose their sexual activity because of stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lack of dialogue is key, according to the dozen or so experts\u2014doctors, youth educators, youth living with HIV\u2014I interviewed for this article.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This is not an easy to talk about, and given the cultural intersections of 2017\u2014the \u201chistorical privilege\u201d combined with the considerable rates of new infections among youth\u2014it\u2019s a difficult subject for some teens to wrap their heads around.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kaiserfamilyfoundation.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/8386-f.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Kaiser Family Foundation survey from 2012<\/a>\u00a0found that \u201cmost young people say they are not hearing much about HIV\/AIDS. Three out of five say they \u2018rarely\u2019 (37 percent) or \u2018never\u2019 (27 percent) saw or read any news coverage about HIV\/AIDS or other STDs in the last year.
