The Prevention Research Center at Tulane University<\/strong><\/p>\n

Health Promotion Practicum Program<\/strong><\/p>\n

Program Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Fall 2008, the Prevention Research Center at Tulane University will offer <\/strong>one competitive practicum internship to provide an exceptional student with real-life experience in the field of health promotion.\u00a0 For this semester’s internship, the PRC is working with the Friends of Lafitte Corridor, a member of our Community Advisory Board.<\/p>\n


\nThe Friends of Lafitte Corridor<\/strong> formed in 2006 to preserve the open space of the Lafitte Corridor, from the French Quarter to Canal Boulevard.\u00a0 FOLC has advocated for and is facilitating the creation of a greenway with bicycle and pedestrian paths linking neighborhoods, cultural features, historic sites, retail areas, and public spaces.\u00a0 The selected student will assist the organization with activities such as benchmarking existing successful greenway projects, performing a literature review on existing evaluation data regarding the impact of greenways, helping to research and coordinate opportunities to convene a bicycle\/pedestrian advisory committee for New Orleans, and participating in other FOLC activities.\u00a0 The student will also conduct an evaluation to correspond with a TUSPH research project related to the Lafitte Corridor.<\/p>\n


\nThe deadline for applying is July 30, 2008<\/strong>.\u00a0 The intern will be selected from among qualified applicants and notified as soon as possible, but no later than August 30, 2008.\u00a0 The internship position will begin this fall, but may continue past the fall semester, depending on student availability and the organization’s specific needs.<\/p>\n


\nInterns will be required to work a total of <\/strong>300 hours as part of this internship.\u00a0 This internship can fulfill the graduation requirement for a 200-hour practicum.\u00a0 The additional 100-hours may also fulfill the culminating experience requirement, depending on your department’s specific graduation requirements.\u00a0 Please consult with your advisor to determine if this internship is a good fit with your academic and professional interests and your department’s requirements.\u00a0 Interns are required to fulfill all reporting requirements mandated by the School’s practicum manual.<\/p>\n


\nThe intern will receive a <\/strong>$3,375.00 stipend from the Prevention Research Center.\u00a0 This internship is limited to masters level public health students at Tulane University.\u00a0 Students applying for the internship must complete all elements of the application.\u00a0 A demonstrated interest in active living research, bikeability\/walkability issues, or the built environment is required.\u00a0 Selected student must also have evaluation experience.<\/p>\n
